70 Years Ago—Mar. 23,
1944: Italian partisan
bombing decimates a German SS police unit in Rome, 33 Germans & 10 Italian
civilians are killed.
Volcanic ash from Vesuvius destroys almost all (about 80) B-25s of the US 340th
Bomb Group at Pompeii Airfield.
The photo and the story about Pompeii is really impressive! I have never heard of it before. And look what the soldier's wearing: an early war helmet (M1917A1 Helmet)
I find this whole episode so fascinating! I've always loved geology, so when I heard Vesuvius erupted during WWII, I was double fascinated. Of course I had to work this into a novel (On Distant Shores) :)
