70 Years Ago—Feb. 27, 1942: Battle of Java Sea begins—Allies fail to prevent Japanese landing at Java and lose 10 ships. British commandos parachute into Bruneval, France, steal only German “Würzburg” short-wave radar device leading Luftwaffe to abandon program. Nazis order construction of gas chambers at Auschwitz.
