70 Years Ago—Oct. 22, 1942: Britain reduces age of conscription to 18. Maj. Gen. Mark Clark lands by sub at Cherchel, Algeria for clandestine meeting with Vichy French. First transports for Operation Torch, the Allied landings in North Africa, depart UK (cargo ships).
